BLUi / FIELD NOTES NO. 002
An everyday iPad, a busy kitchen, and a more secure place to return to.
Our kitchen iPad gets used for two things most often: home automation and recipes. The frustrating part was finding it uncharged when we needed it, or leaving it somewhere it could get knocked.
We use an IPORT Connect Pro case and BaseStation to give it a regular place on the bench. The base is heavy, the iPad attaches firmly, and the whole setup feels secure.
Recipes and home controls within reach
Having the iPad in the kitchen makes sense for us. We can bring up a recipe while cooking or access our home automation controls without going looking for another device.
Before, keeping it charged was something we didn’t always remember. Giving it a dedicated charging base has made returning it part of the routine. When we finish using it, it goes back.
That’s probably the biggest improvement: we’re less likely to find a flat battery just when we want to use it.

Secure on the bench, easy to take with us
The weight of the BaseStation was one of the first things you will notice. It feels substantial, and the attachment is strong. We appreciate that reassurance in a kitchen, where a device sitting loosely on the bench can feel vulnerable.
The case adds protection around the iPad, too. For us, the combination feels much safer than leaving it unprotected or propping it against something nearby.
It still gets lifted off regularly. We use it for other apps and tasks, take it where we need it, then bring it back. Having a base hasn’t changed the flexibility of the iPad; it’s simply given it somewhere to return to.

There’s also something we like about the base when the iPad isn’t there. It looks neat and unobtrusive on its own, so we’re happy to leave it on the bench top.
For anyone who already uses an iPad around the house, those are the details we’d think about: where it sits, how secure it feels, and whether charging fits easily into the way you use it.
Field Notes shares our experience of technology in everyday spaces. This edition features the IPORT CONNECT PRO case and BaseStation in our kitchen.
